Install Windows Service Update Services (WSUS) on Windows server 2019
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) enables information technology administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates. You can use WSUS to fully manage the distribution of updates that are released through Microsoft Update to computers on your network. A WSUS server provides features that you can use to manage and distribute updates through a management console and can also be the update source for other WSUS servers within the organization. WSUS can help you:
- Centralize update management
- Automate Update management
If you are in a Windows environment, there is a lot of benefits you can get from WSUS ranging from Security to fully automated patches and updates together with more time in your hands. The following steps will get WSUS installed on Windows server 2019:
Step 1: Start Server Manager
As with all Windows Server roles, we have to go to the Server Manager to begin the installation. Hit your “Windows” key and search for Server Manager if it is not already opened.
Once open, click on “Add Roles and Features“
Step 2: Click Next on Wizard
On the first page of the “Add Roles and Features Wizard“, click “Next“.
Step 3: Select Installation Type
In the “Select Installation type page“, select “Role-based or feature-based-installation” and click “Next“
Step 4: Choose Destination Server
Select the server you will install WSUS on and click “Next“
Step 5: Select Roles to install
In this “Select server roles” part check the “Windows Service Update Services” box then a pop-up window will come up. Click “Add Features” then click on “Next” on the two following windows.
Add Features
Hit “Next“
Hit “Next” one more.
Step 6: Select Role services
On the window titled “Select Role services” click “Next“
Step 7: Content Location
On the window titled “Content Location“, you have the option of specifying where update packages will be stored. If you have no location, simply uncheck the box and hit “Next“. You can read the contents of the window to understand it better.
Click “Next” after unchecking the box or adding a location.
Step 8: Finish up
Click “Next” on the next two windows then hit install on the last window. Give the server time to install requisite packages. I recommend rebooting the server after installations are done.
Then hit “Install” with pleasure
Step 9: Post-installation Tasks
After installation completes and rebooting, you should see WSUS icon on the “Server Manager“. Clicking on it will show a message “Configuration requires..“. Click on More at the far right of the alert which will bring up another window.
On the Pop up window, click on “Launch Post-installation” link. And it should run for a short while then finish.
Conclusion
After we are done installing WSUS there are a lot to do such as adding hosts, configuring networking with the hosts and much more that we shall embark on in the coming guides.
